The Circle of Life
Correct me if I’m wrong but zebra mussels were the end of the world, right? Invasive species that was going to kill off all sport fish in the Great Lakes? Then it was the cormorant. Then the goby… But Mother Nature has her tricks too. The gobies are the only fish that loves the zebra mussels and it turns out that the cormorants love the gobies. I personally dislike all three because they’ve ruined sport fishing in Georgian Bay but you’ve got to dig how the whole thing seems to come together.
Today we went for a picnic down to Little Bluff Conservation Area, south of Picton, Ontario, and we saw the most amazing sight. A Northern Water Snake (I think) caught a huge goby and proceeded to choke it down - 6 feet in front of us. I took a huge video and lots of pictures but mostly I was just blown away by how this snake was not the least bit afraid of us (and how huge the goby was).
I’m not a nature-watcher by any means but I kind of felt like one today. It was totally the Discovery Channel, within two arms lengths.
